Our experienced teacher will share with you holistic views of financial risk management as well as practical applications of computational tool.

Highlights

This programme aims to provide students with the knowledge of risk management and quantitative analysis using computational tools. It discusses the development of financial markets and investment products for financial risk management. In addition, it covers practical valuation and applications of risk models for financial risk management.

This course has already been approved as an eligible course of the Financial Incentive Scheme for Professional Training (“the Scheme”) under the Pilot Programme to Enhance Talent Training for the Asset and Wealth Management Sector (“the Pilot Programme”).  The Scheme aims to enhance the competency and professionalism of in-service practitioners within the asset and wealth management sector and to assist other practitioners within the financial services industry in acquiring the knowledge and skills required for entering the sector.  Eligible applicants will be subsidised 80% of the course fees by the HKSAR Government upon satisfactory completion of the courses approved by [Name of Course Provider], subject to a ceiling of HK$15,000.   Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute is appointed as the implementation agent of the Pilot Programme.  Regarding the details of eligible criteria and application procedures, please refer to the dedicated web-site of the Pilot Programme (https://www.wamtalent.org.hk/). 

 

 

Tutors : 

(1) Dr. Zenki Kwan, FRM, CAIA, CB
Dr. Zenki Kwan, FRM, CAIA, CB, is the investment director of a listed company and a family office in Hong Kong, responsible for investment strategy and portfolio management across equities, fixed income, currency, funds and structured products. He has previously worked in J.P. Morgan, UBS, McKinsey and Samsung Securities. In addition to his doctoral degree, Dr. Kwan also holds Master of Finance and Master of Applied Business Research degrees as well as completed executive education programs at Harvard Law School and Oxford University Saïd Business School, respectively.

(2) Ms. Jenian Tai, CFA, FRM
Ms. Jenian Tai is a Data Scientist at Luminant Analytics for Nassau Re – a reinsurance company based in Connecticut. She specializes in both fundamental and quantitative analyses as well as machine learning for practical application in financial institutions.
Jenian was a senior fundamental research analyst with over 10 years’ experience in multiple billion-dollar international hedge funds and private equity, where she served as an expert in deep fundamental research, modelling, alpha strategy formulation and stock picking. Her exposure has spanned global financial market multi-strategy trading and investment as well as risk management.
In addition to her hedge fund career, Jenian worked as a risk analyst at Societe Generale’s US derivative trading desk and as a data scientist at New York State Homes & Community Renewal. She had analyzed structured and unstructured data in enterprise environment.
Jenian based out of Hong Kong and New York. She is a CFA and a FRM, and she holds a Master of Science in Data Analytics from Columbia University.

(3) Mr. Walter Lau, FCCA
Mr. Walter Lau is a finance professional and chartered accountant with over 10 years’ experience in accounting, finance and investment. He worked in Tricor Services Limited and was responsible for wide-ranged financial advisory services, including accounting and treasury management. Moreover, he worked in Philip Group to dealing equities and derivatives and offer professional advice on local equities, derivatives, structural products, funds and wealth management, as well as foreign investment opportunities. As a financial risk professional, he worked in HSBC by reporting and assessing the risks of equity structural derivatives. Apart from his professional working experience, he has delivered finance and investment courses at various tertiary educational institutions over 10 years.
Walter holds a fellowship of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He earned an MSc in Finance (Pass with Distinction) from the University of Michigan Dearborn and a BBA (Hons) in Accountancy (minor in Finance) from the City University of Hong Kong.

(4) Mr. Ferrix Lau, HKACG, ACG, CFA, FRM
Mr. Ferrix Lau has over 10 years’ teaching experience in business, accounting and finance modules at tertiary level. He teachers Financial Analysis, Financial Risk Management, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting as well as Corporate Governance. Moreover, he is a co-author of a Statistics book, Quantitative Analysis for Professional Studies and Projects. Furthermore, he has strong interests in the areas of Statistical Analysis, Quantitative Finance and Machine Intelligence. Mr. Lau has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, major in Economics and minor in Computer Science. Besides, he holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with Distinction from The University of Hong Kong, concentrating on the theme of Accounting Control and Financial Management.

Programme Details

This programme provides students with knowledge of risk management and quantitative analysis using computational tools.   It discusses the development of financial markets and investment products for financial risk management. In addition, it covers practical valuation and applications of risk models for financial risk management.

On completion of the module, students should be able to
1. identify different types of financial risks and tools for financial risk management;
2. apply computational tools to value investment products and financial derivatives;
3. analyze financial risks and build risk models using computational tools;
4. discuss the latest development in the financial markets and investment products.

Modules

The programme consists of one module and the syllabus is as follows. It comprises 30 contact hours with lectures and practical classes in computer laboratory. For students completing the module, they can get the award of Executive Certificate in Applied Financial Risk Management.

-Common types of risks: market risks, credit risks and operational risks
-Risk measurement and management tools
-Value creation, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and risk reporting

(2) Quantitative Analysis
-Probability and statistics
-Quantitative analysis using computational tools
-Forecasting and simulation methods

(3) Financial Markets and Investment Products
-Financial institutions and exchange markets
-Analysis of investment products and financial derivatives
-Foreign exchange risk

(4) Valuation and Risk Modeling
-Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Multifactor models
-Stress testing and scenario analysis
-Financial valuation and risk modeling using computational tools

Assessment method:  two take-home exercises + group project presentation

The Executive Certificate will be conferred to candidates who pass in continuous assessment and final assessment as well as achieved at least 70% attendance of the programme

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall hold:
a)    a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognized University or equivalent; or
b)   an Associate Degree/ a Higher Diploma or equivalent, and have at least 2 years of relevant working experience.

Applicants with qualifications in quantitative areas (e.g., mathematics, engineering, statistics, computer science, economics, finance) are preferred. Those with other qualifications and substantial senior level work experience will be considered on individual merit.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and the applicant’s name.. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying  “Course Application” on the envelope.  HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, continuing students of award-bearing programmes, if their programmes offer online service, may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay and Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolement Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circustance.
  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder's credit card account.
  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be repsonsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to "HKU SPACE" to any of our enrolment centres.
