Highlights

This programme aims to prepare registered nurses for an advanced role in a clinical nursing specialty, namely, Enterostomal Therapy Nursing (ETN), within a range of health care settings. It is essential that registered nurses are competent to provide high quality nursing care to patients requiring wound, incontinent and or stoma care.  
 

The educational guidelines developed by the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) guided the design of the course curriculum. Therefore, graduates are eligible for the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) membership registration.

Programme Details

Programme Objectives

On completion of the programme, the students should be able to:

  1. Assess the needs of the patients who are about to have, or who already have a stoma, and or to have incontinence problem and or chronic wounds;
  2. Educate clients and their families in the prevention of the development of complications related to stomas, chronic wounds or incontinence;
  3. Develop the competency in skill assessment on wound and stoma management;
  4. Synthesise principles of scientific inquiry ;  and
  5. Discuss the importance of qualitative research methods in understanding human experiences.

Modules

Module 1: Advanced Specialization in Enterostomal Therapy Nursing

This is a part-time course which includes 185 hours of theoretical input, 160 hours of clinical practice and a 23 hours of presentation, product assessment, OSCE and examination (Total 368 hours).

Module Objectives

On completion of the module, the students should be able to:

  1. Assess the needs of the patients who are about to have, or who already have a stoma, and or to have incontinence problem and or wounds;
  2. Apply enterostomal therapy nursing approach to patient with the identified physiological conditions;
  3.  Educate clients and their families in the prevention of the development of complications related to stomas, wounds or incontinence;
  4. Give advice to the patient and the family caregiver on the use of appropriate product for different types of stomas, wounds and incontinence problems;
  5. Develop the competency in skill assessment on wound, continence and stoma management.   

 

Theoretical Component

Students will attend lectures one day plus one other evening per week. It is expected that they will integrate their present knowledge and skills into the study. The course focuses on Pathophysiological  processes, Therapeutic interventions and Roles of the nurses, Principles of counseling and The teaching-learning process. This module comprises four parts:

  • Stoma Care
  • Wound Care
  • Continence Care
  • Professional development
Study Time

Evening class :   1800 – 2100 (Wednesday)

Day class :           0830 – 1730 (Thursday)

Clinical Component

0830 – 1730 (Weekdays)

Students will spend a total of 160 hours on clinical observation and supervised clinical practice during the course of study. They are expected to apply specialized knowledge and skills in providing comprehensive nursing care to patients in various clinical settings.

The students will be divided into small groups. Each group will spend 4 weeks in Stoma, Wound and Continence care service of hospitals subject to the approval of the hospitals.

 

Module 2: Methods in Healthcare Research

 

This is a 4 months, 3 hours weekly part-time course on two different approaches to healthcare research: qualitative research methods and quantitative research methods. The overall aim of this module is to meet the expanded interest of healthcare professionals in evidence-based practice and prepare them as novice research consumers.

Module Objectives

On completion of the module, the students should be able to:

  1. critically evaluate the approaches of quantitative and qualitative to the research process;
  2. critically review research articles as a research consumer;
  3. discuss the importance of qualitative research methods in understanding human experiences; and
  4. examine approaches, outcomes and values of quantitative designs;
Study time

Evening class : 1830 – 2130 (Wednesday)

 
Teaching Strategies

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, discussions, workshops, clinical observation and practice (Scenario-based discussions, small group tutorials and panel discussions should be used where possible).

Specialists in the area of stoma care, continence care and wound care will be invited to participate in sharing their expertise and knowledge with the students.

Teaching Medium

The medium of instruction will be English.  All teaching materials, examinations and assignments will be in English.

 

Assessment
80% attendance of the theoretical component and full attendance of the practical component.
The assessments of Module 1 consist of the following:
  • Written Examination : 3 examinations
  • Product notebook
  • Product assessment
  • Case study
  • Clinical nursing project
  • Continuous clinical assessment

 

The assessments of Module 2 consist of the following:

  • Literature review

  • Research proposal

 

Students MUST PASS ALL the required assessments to successfully complete the programme.  Students who fail in any one of the assessments will be required to sit a re-examination, or to be re-assessed in the case of clinical practice. 

 

Award

Upon successful completion of both modules, students will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice (Enterostomal Therapy Nursing) within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

Professional Accreditation

Students who graduate from the Enterostomal Therapy Nursing programme may be eligible to register as members with the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists. (Subject to final approval)

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall:

1. be general Registered Nurses (RN) registered with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong;

and

2. have at least two years post-registration clinical experience;

and

3. hold a bachelor’s degree of a relevant field awarded by a recognized university.

If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants shall provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:

  • an overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or
  • a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or
  • HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or
  • HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3 or above; or
  • equivalent qualifications.

2. Cheque Or Bank Draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.

 

3. VISA/MasterCard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. Notes:

  • For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, WeChat Pay, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.
  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.
