Highlights

The programme is specifically designed to address the growing need for health professionals with expertise in nutrition and lifestyle modification and the prevention of chronic diseases, integrating evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle factors with practical strategies for chronic disease prevention. It aims to equip students with a critical understanding of the scientific interplay between nutrition, lifestyle behaviours and the prevention of chronic diseases, enabling them to make evidence-informed personal and professional decisions relating to nutrition and lifestyle, and to acquire analytical skills and practical knowledge and tools to promote healthier lifestyles

 

The programme is suitable for a wide range of learners, including healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, medical social workers and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, as well as wellness professionals including fitness trainers, coaches, mental health counsellors and yoga instructors. It also welcomes individuals who are interested in learning about evidence-based approaches to nutrition and developing strategies for lifelong wellness

Programme Details

The programme equips students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to promote healthy eating behaviours, prevent nutrition-related diseases, and address disparities in food access within diverse communities. Graduates will be prepared to design and implement community nutrition interventions and support public health through effective nutrition initiatives. The programme comprises a total of 60 credits and is pitched at HKQF Level 6.​

On completion, students should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate strategic approaches, including the ethical use of AI, for chronic disease prevention through nutrition and lifestyle modification
  • Analyse dietary patterns, lifestyle factors, socio-cultural influences and food systems influencing individual and community healt
  • Evaluate and interpret scientific evidence related to nutrition, lifestyle, sustainability and health to make informed recommendations
  • Apply critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills to develop solutions supporting positive health behaviour change across diverse socio-cultural contexts
  • Apply appropriate nutrition research methodology and critically assess and interpret results

Modules

The programme comprises five compulsory modules (total 60 credits, HKQF Level 6). Modules 3 and 5 are shared with the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Nutrition . Students who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Nutrition will be exempt from Modules 3 and 5.

  • Module 1: Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (12 credits) – Covers chronic diseases with a focus on epidemiology, impact and prevention (global and local), and develops the ability to evaluate interventions and plan prevention strategies for individuals and communities.
  • Module 2: Principles of Nutritional Science (15 credits) – Provides an overview of key human nutrition principles, including digestion and absorption, nutrient metabolism, dietary reference values, dietary assessment, and nutrition needs across the lifecycle . (Pre-requisite for Module 3)
  • Module 3: Promoting Health in the Community through Nutrition (15 credits) (Shared module) – Provides grounding in community nutrition and nutrition promotion strategies, and equips students to develop, implement and evaluate interventions to prevent chronic diseases within diverse community settings.
  • Module 4: Lifestyle Factors and Behaviour Change (12 credits) – Examines lifestyle factors (e.g. physical activity, tobacco/alcohol, sleep and stress) and behaviour change theories to support strategies for lifestyle change and self-management in chronic disease prevention.
  • Module 5: Nutrition Research and Evaluation (6 credits) (Shared module) – Develops skills in community nutrition research and evaluation, including monitoring and evaluation frameworks, qualitative/quantitative methods, and interpreting and communicating findings ethically and effectively

Delivery and Learning Activities

  • Medium of instruction: English.
     

  • Normal duration: 18 months part-time.
     

  • Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials and workshops. Tutorials include real-world case studies and reflective exercises, while workshops focus on practical skills and hands-on learning.
     

  • Assessment methods include a written examination, class test, written assignments, presentations.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall hold a bachelor’s degree in food, nutrition, life science, health science or related disciplines awarded by a recognised institution.  

If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants shall provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:  

  1. an overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or  
  2. a score of 80 or above (for tests taken prior to 21 January 2026) or a score of 4.5 or above (for tests taken from 21 January 2026 onwards) in the internet-based TOEFL (iBT); or 

  3. HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or 
  4. HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3 or above; or 

  5. Grade C or above in Cambridge English: C1 Advanced; or 

  6. 180 or above in Cambridge Linguaskill General Certificate; or 

  7. equivalent qualifications.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
