Mr Lou Kenley (BSc Business and Management)
University of London
The Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences (EMFSS) programme is a prominent set of degrees awarded by the University of London primarily for international students through the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
I was fascinated by how such a prestigious degree from one of world’s best social science and management universities could be offered and studied in Hong Kong and around any corner of the world.
Since the syllabus, course materials and examinations are designed by academics from the LSE, students and employers are assured that the standard attained by overseas graduates are similar to those who study on-campus.
Studying a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business and Management was challenging and difficult but a rewarding and worthwhile journey. This degree enables one to be better-rounded - seeing business issues from a more critical and global perspective.
It surprised me that examinations were held only once a year. Since I was not accustomed to this, I had to cope with leaving my comfort zone and push myself to study and revise proactively. At first it was strenuous, I struggled with lack of self-confidence and feared that I might even fail the exams. However, it has made me realize that I am able to overcome my weaknesses and gain an understanding of my own abilities.
One of the highlights of studying this programme with HKU SPACE is that when the examination period approached, lecturers and professors from the LSE came to Hong Kong for revision courses and explained difficult topics, answered queries and clarified mix-ups.
Graduating with first-class honours from the programme has opened up numerous paths for me in both graduate studies and career opportunities. I am sincerely grateful to the University of London and HKU SPACE for providing this once in a lifetime opportunity.
