【Easy Portuguese - alimentar um burro a pão-de-ló】
Portuguese people seem to treasure sponge cake (pão-de-ló) very much. If you give a "pão-de-ló" to a donkey (burro),they will think that you shouldn't treat it so well. The meaning of the idiom is similar to "cast pearls before swine", i.e. offering something valuable to someone who does not need it or deserve it.
