Do you know that there are more microbial cells in your body than your own cells? In fact, there are 3-10X more bacteria in number than human cells in each human being, similar in size of a human brain and weighting up to 3-5lbs all together! We have known about these microbes existence for long time but only recently we have quantitative estimate in number and characterization of these microbes in our body and specifically the gut with the use of Next Generation DNA sequencing. Normally, these microbes live happily in harmony within our body and I would go as far as calling/classifying these microbes as an organ in our body! Scientists have been busy in the past 10 years establishing the links of gut microbes with Inflammatory? Bowel Syndrome Disease and number of metabolic disorders, including diabetes, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Scientists also have established that the gut microbiota can cause obesity in mice, and fecal microbiota transplant is associated with a significant improvement in Inflammatory? Bowel Syndrome Disease in human. Professor Leung will present the most updated scientific findings about the gut microbiome and how they interplay with diet to affect one’s health and wellness.
