Practices and Possibilities of Online Learning and Teaching in Foreign Language Education

Online education has become a common form of learning in recent years, and the widespread of the COVID-19 has further accelerated the adoption of online teaching and learning worldwide. Foreign language education, which is traditionally undertaken face-to-face in classrooms, is also forced to undergo a drastic change in the current situation. Japanese language instructors at HKU SPACE had to adapt to the sudden change of teaching environment by reconsidering fundamental issues such as effective teaching methodologies, suitable teaching materials, and proper assessment in non-traditional spaces. In this talk, the speaker tries to examine and share the practices and challenges of online teaching from the perspective of Japanese language education, based on his own experience and the large-scale survey conducted among adult learners of Japanese Language at the HKU SPACE, Oriental Studies.
