Ms. TSANG Chi Wai
Ms. TSANG Chi Wai graduated from the Chinese Language and Literature Department of CUHK and has been a local secondary school Chinese teacher for over ten years. Currently, she holds the position of Visiting Lecturer (part-time) at PolyU SPEED, where she teaches Chinese to non-Chinese speaking students. Additionally, she works as a part-time tutor for Cantonese courses at HKUSPACE. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ms. Tsang pursued her German language studies in Münster, Germany. Having a keen interest in language learning, she enjoys sharing her language observations and learning insights.

Cantonese is one of the seven major Chinese dialects, spoken by more than 85 million people around the world. It is the language of daily communication in Hong Kong. You may be speaking Cantonese every day, but have you ever noticed how unique and interesting it is?Are the English translations of common surnames and names of places such as Chan(陳) and Tsim Sha Tsui(尖沙咀) Cantonese pinyin(Jyutping)?When you pronounce “zi mui”(姊妹), “mui mui zai” (妹妹仔) and “mui fu” (妹夫), are you aware that the pronunciation of each “mui” (妹) is different?Does the word "water" in Cantonese just mean a liquid for drinking and cleaning? In this talk, the speaker will share with you the fun of Cantonese from the perspectives of pinyin, tone sandhi and lexicons.
