In the late Qing Dynasty, weakened and coveted by foreign powers, the Qing government constructed the Kowloon Walled City as a military stronghold in response to British expansionist intentions. Located in the Kowloon area, this fortress was designed to enhance defense capabilities. Over time, the role of the Walled City transformed—it served as a refuge for refugees, a breeding ground for crime, and an unregulated zone. It even became a point of contention among China, Britain, and Hong Kong. In 1994, the Kowloon Walled City was demolished. However, this year, due to a popular film related to the Walled City, it has once again captured attention both domestically and internationally. This lecture will delve into the history of the Kowloon Walled City and explore its significance during that era.
