Synopsis
One of the major concerns in the local construction industry is the alarming increase in construction accidents, particularly in scaffolding and gondola work. The consequences of these accidents can be severe, leading to loss of life or permanent disability. Therefore, the implementation of a safety management system is crucial in this industry.
This seminar aims to address the key issues surrounding the high rates of construction accidents and fatalities in Hong Kong. The speaker, Mr Maxwell Chiu, will discuss potential accident areas and the benefits of a well-managed safety system. These benefits include a reduction in liability claims, lower employee compensation and insurance premiums, and less severe accidents.
While these advantages are appealing, they often come with costs and challenges, especially regarding implementation. In this seminar, Mr Chiu will also outline some major obstacles that may hinder successful implementation and desired outcomes, such as the difficulty of managing multi-layered subcontractors in Hong Kong, inadequate worker safety awareness, tight project schedules, and a lack of training.
In summary, the seminar aims to provide insights and strategies for improving construction safety practices, reducing accidents, and creating a safer work environment for workers. Mr Chiu’s extensive experience in both the government and private sectors, along with his expertise in teaching professional training programmes in construction management, will undoubtedly make the seminar informative and engaging.
