Dr Chan Wing Cheong

Dr. Joseph Chan holds a PhD in Chinese History of Science. With support from Joint Publishing (Hong Kong) Ltd., he published a book Gu jin li shu kao古今曆術考 on Chinese traditional astronomy and calendrical science in 2013. In recent years he was interviewed by TVB programmes “The Seasons of Life” and “Sunday Report”on topics about Chinese traditional calendar. His research focus includes Chinese ancient astronomy and astrology, and the transmission of European astronomy to China.

Both Yijing and Chinese Calendar are highly valued in Chinese culture. Xiang Zhuan says, “the ideal Confucian person should reconcile the calendar with seasonal changes”, yet the general public are not familiar with such knowledge. As we are approaching the Yisi Year of the Snake, this talk attempts to demystify Yijing and Chinese Calendar by running through a series of questions and answers.
