Why has Hong Kong cinema become much closer to Hong Kong audiences? The talk will focus on a sense of place as the main reason. This sense of place is reflected in recent works that shift attention away from Victoria Harbour and high-rise buildings to recreate places such as the streets of Sham Shui Po in Drifting (濁水漂流), a coffin shop in Hung Hom in The Last Dance (破地獄), and Wah Fu Estate in Ciao UFO (再見UFO). It is also seen in many film-themed community guided tours, online maps, databases, and similar projects. All of these have made Hong Kong cinema far more grounded and relatable than before.
