Hong Kong – 19 April 2023HKU SPACE is pleased to announce a new breakthrough in education with the launch of Microcredentials in April 2023 to meet the needs of students in the 21st century. Microcredential courses allow students to progress in a more flexible way by setting their own learning pace and course content and “stacking up” credits to earn a certificate or diploma, setting a new milestone for continuing education and creating a new learning model for those who have learning aspirations for further studies.

Microcredentials are an emerging worldwide trend. They are individualised learning programmes – the study plans can be made based on the student’s personal pace, time and interests. These courses are short and credit-based, relevant to careers and professions or for general interest. A digital certificate or digital badge will be issued to successful learners.

With their three main features of stackable credits, high flexibility and personalisation, streamlined Microcredential courses enable students to gradually achieve recognised academic qualifications at their own pace to suit their own plans.

Stackable credits allow students to accumulate credits to earn a certificate or diploma and, depending on the subjects, gain a Certificate or Diploma in Professional Practice or a Certificate or Diploma in General Studies.

High flexibility. As most Microcredential courses are short - around 30 contact hours - and credits are normally valid over a 5-year period, students can design learning schedules that suit their own needs.

Personalisation: Students can choose courses that best meet their personal goals, professional needs, and preferences, and create their own personal educational mind maps.

Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE said, “Nowadays, the world is undergoing enormous technological and digital transformation, and talented people with diverse skills are increasingly valued by employers. To meet this market need, the School launched Microcredentials to enable working adults to accumulate different mixtures of knowledge and skills. Learners can not only choose interdisciplinary courses according to their own needs, but also accumulate credits to obtain certificates or diplomas to strengthen their competitiveness.”

In the first phase, the School will launch around 150 Microcredential courses, covering more than 30 themes, including: Architectural Studies, Artificial Intelligence, Aviation and Business Aviation, Business Management, Chinese Medicine, Finance and Investment, Supply Chain and Logistics, Digital Transformation, Chinese Tea Culture, Medical and Healthcare, and Sustainability. In order to keep pace with changing times and to meet social needs, More Microcredential topics will be added gradually to provide learners with additional choices.

Many of the Microcredential courses are CEF eligible so that students can apply for financial support for their tuition fees under the Government Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Microcredentials are suitable for anyone who wants to progress in their careers, upgrade their skills, change professions, or even just to enrich their lives or pursue personal interests.
