School Concert 2023The Joys of Spring
- Date
- 14 Apr 2023 (Fri)
The School Concert “The Joys of Spring” was held successfully on 14 April in the College Theatre at the Lee Shiu Building of the HKU SPACE Community College. Over 270 music lovers gave the show a rapturous reception. And, as usual, many of the performers were drawn from our own ranks as both students and teachers displayed their dazzling talents.
Professor William Lee, Director; Professor Sonny Lo, Deputy Director; Dr John Cribbin, Deputy Director; HKU SPACE teachers, students, alumni and patrons all came to support talented performers from the School.
The evening started with a sublime 4-hand piano duet from two gifted teachers, Elsa Lee and Cherie Tsang, who wowed the audience with an exquisitely sensitive rendering of Debussy’s Petite Suite for Piano L. 65.
This was immediately followed by another of our teachers Alex Chen who joined with Mida Pang to sing some Broadway hits including, New York New York and Dream a little Dream of Me, I see the Light from the animated movie Tangled and All I ask of You from the megahit show Phantom of the Opera.
Then another of our teachers, Felix Ungar came to the stage with the rest of his brilliant string quartet of John Ma, Biffa Kwok and Toni Roig Tarros. They played the 1st movement of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, followed by the extraordinary Libertango from Astor Piazzolla, before Felix himself gave a stunning performance of the 3 Gs for solo viola by Kenji Bunch. Wonderful!
But there was more to come. And before the audience could draw a breath, Cal and Zoe stepped into the spotlight for a sensationally energetic display of tap dancing which got a huge reception from the audience.
Then finally, with everyone’s feet tapping, the busking trio of Samuel Ng and students Yue Hin and Thomas Yeung brought the concert to a terrific finale with some CantoPop favourites including 喝采, 今天只做一件事 and 最後派對, before Alex Chen returned to sing goodbye with love with 憑著愛.
It truly was a night of many joys for spring.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the musicians, teachers and alumni for their extraordinary efforts and captivating performances. Our sincere thanks also goes to the event sponsor, Mr William Au Weng-hei, SBS, JP, and all other patrons, for their generous sponsorship. All the proceeds will go to the HKU SPACE Bursary Fund to assist full-time students with financial needs.
