The school concert, The Joys of Spring, was successfully held on 10 April in the College Theatre at the Lee Shiu Building of the HKU SPACE Community College. Over 300 music lovers gave the show a rapturous reception.
Professor William Lee, Director of HKU SPACE; Dr John Cribbin, Deputy Director; Professor Cheng Kin-fai, College Principal Emeritus; Dr Darwin Chen, Honorary Fellow; Dr Danny Gittings, Head of the College of Humanities and Law; as well as HKU SPACE teachers, students, alumni and patrons all came to support the talented performers from the School.
The concert began with guest lecturer Huang Naiwei, who performed four renowned piano pieces: Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, Gershwin’s Swanee, Chopin’s Nocturne Op.9 No.2 and Kapustin’s Eight Concert Etudes, Op. 40 No.1. This was immediately followed by a performance from Natalie Ho, HKU SPACE Community College alumna and rising star of the new girl group STRAYZ, who captivated the audience with her refreshing renditions of the pop songs 第一零一次再見, 至少做一件離譜的事 (Byebye Byebye Byebye Byebye……, You Gotta Screw Up At Least Once) and the first performance of her new track 第一萬零一次重遇 (The 10001th Reunion).
Next, Principal Suona and guan player of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Ma Wai-him (Didaboy), alongside guitar teacher Ron Ng and bassist Vinc Chan, delivered a breathtaking ensemble performance featuring 絲綢之路幻想組曲 - 龜茲舞, (Silk Road Fantasy Suite - Kucha Dance), Sing, Sing, Sing, and Spain. Their masterful collaboration and innovative arrangements left the audience in awe.
The energy continued to rise as dance teachers Cal and Zoe, took the stage with an electrifying tap dance performance. Their rhythmic moves and interactive engagement with the audience filled the college theatre with applause, laughter, and the infectious beat of their steps!
Finally, the grand finale was led by hip hop teacher Lokin along with dancers Him J, Hoini, and DJ SuenNam, who brought the house down with an exhilarating hip hop showcase. They introduced and demonstrated key elements of hip hop dance before inviting the audience on stage to try DJing and hip hop moves, ending the concert on an unforgettable high.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the musicians, teachers and alumni for their extraordinary efforts and captivating performances. Our sincere thanks also goes to the event sponsor, Mr William Au Weng-hei, SBS, JP, and all the other patrons, for their generous sponsorship. All the proceeds will go to the HKU SPACE Bursary Fund to assist full-time students with financial needs.
