The Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law (CertHE) is for you if:

Fastest pathway to a prestigious law degree: No academic qualification is required for entry, but you will be directly studying the University of London LLB Year 1 modules.

Cost savings: After completing this program, you will receive an internationally recognized law certificate from UoL, and you will be able to apply straight to the University of London LLB Year 2.

The Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law (CertHE) is for you if:

  • You wish to pursue a law degree but do not meet the LLB entry requirements;
  • You have a personal or professional interest in law;
  • You intend to undertake a degree programme but would like to gain a recognised law qualification before starting a formal degree study.

University of London CertHE in Common Law

The CertHE in Common Law is a qualification in its own right that also provides an entry route to degree study.  The modules studied in the CertHE in Common Law are the same as the Level 4 modules of the University of London LLB.

HKU SPACE tuition package for CertHE lasts for two years and students will study two Level 4 modules in each year.  CertHE students will attend the Main Lectures (36 hours) and Revision Lectures (14 hours) together with the LLB students in each module and will be given additional learning experience and support (Enrichment Seminars and Module-specific Tutorials) throughout the course of study.  Students will take the May/June or October round of the University of London Examinations. The  provisional timetable will be available in May/June. 

Students who wish to study this programme must registered through HKU SPACE as a Recognised Teaching Centre of the University of London.  Students must comply with the attendance requirements. University of London may refuse permission to sit an examination to a student who has not satisfied these requirements. Students who enrolled on HKU SPACE’s two-year tuition package are expected to complete the whole course of study of the CertHE. Student must, in the first academic year, register to study Legal System and Method* before register for any other modules.

  • The maximum period of registration for the CertHE in Common Law is five years.
  • The maximum number of attempts permitted for any module is three.

Course Materials, Online Support and Library Access

University of London will provide module guides, statute books (where provided), UOL Student Portal Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and Online Library. It provides free access to the professional legal databases, etc.

HKU SPACE lecturers will provide supplementary materials including lecture outlines, handouts and legal updates. Students will have access to the HKU SPACE's online learning platform (SOUL). Each student will also be provided HKU Library Borrower's Card.

Award by the University of London

Students who have passed all the four required modules will be awarded Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law by the University of London.

Transfer from the CertHE to Standard Entry LLB

Students who have passed all the four required modules and have been awarded the CertHE may apply to transfer to the Year 2 (Level 5) of Standard Entry LLB and be credited with all Level 4 modules.

Students who pass a minimum of three modules on the CertHE, and have satisfied the attendance requirements, may apply to transfer the registration to the Standard Entry LLB.  However, those who transfer to the LLB before completing the CertHE will not subsequently be eligible to receive the CertHE award.

Career Progression for LLB Holders

University of London LLB is accepted as a pre-requisite academic qualification to the professional stage in many Common Law jurisdictions (such as Hong Kong PCLL).

This is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead.

  • must be aged 18 or above on or before the date of programme registration;
  • must pass the entrance test and attend an interview;
  • must demonstrate a good level of English; AND
  • must register with HKU SPACE as Recognised Teaching Centre of University of London.

How to Apply

All applications must be accompanied by supporting documents. This means you must submit a clearly readable copy in English of all pages of your qualification full transcript. If your application is successful, you may be required to show us the originals of the documents you submitted before your place is confirmed.

Study Visa - Notes to Non-local Applicants

To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong as dependants, who do not need prior approval before taking up full-time and part-time studies. Non-local applicants issued with a valid employment visa also do not need prior approval to pursue part-time studies. It is the responsibility of individual applicants to make appropriate visa arrangements. Admission to a HKU SPACE academic programme/course does not guarantee the issue of a student visa.  Applicants may wish to note that part-time courses are not considered by the Immigration Department for visa purposes except for self-financed, part-time locally accredited taught postgraduate programmes awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.
