Engineering and Science Engineering
Programme Overview
Highlights
With the rapid advancement of technologies in the medical field, a successful health care delivery system depends not only on the expertise of health professionals but also on the proper functioning of sophisticated biomedical equipment. Hence, it is of paramount importance that these biomedical equipment are properly maintained and serviced so as to provide accurate and reliable data and information for clinical diagnoses and treatments.
In collaboration with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), this Diploma programme is a programme for EMSD’s in-house staff. It is offered by HKU SPACE and on completion of the programme, graduates will be awarded with a Diploma for Biomedical Engineering Technician awarded within the HKU System through HKU SPACE.
This programme is not for open recruitment for the time being.
Programme Details
The programme aims to train biomedical engineering technicians, enabling them to participate in the development and application of technology in the healthcare environment. The curriculum provides practical hands-on understanding of the fundamental principles, operations and design of medical diagnostic and therapeutic devices. Medical device-related standards and protocols, safe clinical practices, problem-solving skills, performance assurance-testing procedures, and troubleshooting techniques are also covered in this programme.
Lecture topics include:
- Basic Medical Science
- Monitoring System I – Electrophysiology
- Monitoring System II -Mechanical and Optical Measurement
- Therapeutic Equipment I - Infusion Therapy and Haemodialysis
- Therapeutic Equipment II - Ultrasound, Phototherapy and Others
- Laboratory Equipment
- OT Equipment
- Life-supporting Equipment
- Medical Device Safety and Hazard
- Medical Device Standards and Management
The Diploma for Biomedical Engineering Technician will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE to students who have successfully attended, completed and passed the assessment of the programme.
On completion of the programme, students should be able to:
1. Develop and establish a knowledge base in biomedical engineering;
2. Discuss and summarize engineering practices and standards in the maintenance of biomedical
equipment;
3. Examine different underlying theories in biomedical engineering and their implications in the
operation and maintenance of biomedical equipment;
4. Apply knowledge acquired in analyzing problems in biomedical engineering;
5. Describe and apply methodology and skills for effective maintenance of biomedical equipment;
6. Conduct and lead maintenance activities in biomedical equipment;
7. Tackle issues pertinent to safety in biomedical engineering such as safety alert and incident
investigation; and
8. Communicate with users and operators of biomedical equipment more effectively.
