How to Apply
Applicants must make sure that they fulfill the stated entry requirements (please see below “Entry Requirements”) and that they are able to attend at least 75% of the classes before applying and paying. The School will collect applicants' identification documents for verification and conduct screening as soon as the application and payment are received. Applicants’ enrolment will be confirmed after the application deadline, which is after Jan 3 (Wed).

Highlights

This programme is run under the “Vocational Chinese Language Programme for NCS* School Leavers”, funded by the Language Fund and supported by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), to help ethnic minority residents in Hong Kong integrate into the community. It aims at enhancing NCS school leavers' capability in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese and helping them obtain qualifications recognized by Hong Kong Qualifications Framework so as to enhance their employability. 

Foundation Certificate in Vocational Chinese Language for NCS School Leavers (Literacy and Reading) is open for enrolment for the 2023-24 school year. Students can receive a subsidy cap of 80% of the course fee with satisfactory attendance. ​

The project is a Government-funded programme, supported by Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and funded by the Language Fund. 

 

*NCS stands for Non-Chinese Speaking. 

Programme Details

The programme aims to:

  1. Help non-Chinese speakers in Hong Kong obtain qualifications recognized by the government and different sectors, and increase their employability by enhancing their basic capability in reading and writing in Chinese;
  2. Enable non-Chinese speakers to use Chinese confidently in daily life and at work, and develop their interest in learning Chinese so that they can develop their pathway to learn Chinese and become fluent in Chinese in the future;
  3. Help parents of NCS students understand the difficulties of their children in learning Chinese in mainstream schools so that they can encourage and provide appropriate assistance for their children learning at school.

 

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. Copy and write Chinese characters with correct strokes and stroke orders;
  2. Use Chinese dictionary to continue to learn Chinese characters by self-study;
  3. Read simple materials in Chinese;
  4. Read simple materials covering different industries.

 

Overall Assessment Methods:

  1. Speaking Test – 5 minutes (50%)
  2. Written Test – 1 hour (50%)

 

Syllabus:

  1. Learn to write Chinese characters ( strokes, stroke orders, independent characters, combined characters);
  2. Learn to use a dictionary and internet resources;
  3. Learn to read simple materials, short passages, simple materials from different industries, e.g. titles on newspapers and magazines, directories, menus, price lists, etc.

 

Award:

On successful completion of the programme with 75% attendance and graded D or above, students will be awarded within HKU system through HKU SPACE a Foundation Certificate in Vocational Chinese Language for NCS School Leavers (Literacy and Reading).

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be non-Chinese speaking Hong Kong residents aged 15 or above, with no or very limited ability in reading Chinese, and are currently not studying any full-time programme. 

We recommend that applicants who have no prior foundation in speaking Cantonese should consider starting with the Listening and Speaking course before taking this course.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and the applicant’s name.. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying  “Course Application” on the envelope.  HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, continuing students of award-bearing programmes, if their programmes offer online service, may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay and Faster Payment System (FPS). Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolement Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circustance.
  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder's credit card account.
  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be repsonsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to "HKU SPACE" to any of our enrolment centres.
