Students can engage in a 12-month full-time study programme in Hong Kong to receive the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation award within the HKU system though HKU SPACE. Successful completion of all 10 modules, along with meeting the required assessments and achieving an attendance rate of 80%, will result in the award of the postgraduate diploma qualification, which, together with the master’s degree qualification, is classified as a QF Level 6 in the Qualifications Framework in Hong Kong.

Highlights

The programme is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform translation work across various settings and contexts. The primary objective is to instill a sense of confidence and competence in students, enabling them to do translation work at a level that closely mirrors professional standards. This will be achieved through practical exercises that simulate real-world translation scenarios, including assessing translation works done by artificial intelligence. Students are encouraged to apply the linguistic and cultural concepts they have learned throughout the programme to practical tasks, including the final Translation Project module.

In addition to providing students with practical training, the programme also lays a solid foundation for further academic pursuits. It prepares students for higher qualifications by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of translation theories and methodologies.

On completion of the programme, students should be able to

  1. Translate texts from English to Chinese and from Chinese to English, by applying translation knowledge and skills in specific contexts, including commercial and financial, legal, media, technical and literary;
  2. Discriminate between good and bad translations;
  3. Apply translation knowledge and skills when analyzing texts and turning them into another language creatively; and
  4. Exercise appropriate judgment in completing complex translation projects with close to professional competence.
