【The Portuguese Rooster】
"Portuguese Chicken" is a well-known dish in the neighbouring Macau, but why is a rooster the symbol of Portugal?
The key lies in the legend that a pilgrim was once mistaken as a thief and sentenced to death. Fortunately, he proved his innocence before the execution, by pointing at the freshly baked roast chicken on the judge's table and saying, "If the roast chicken stands up for me, it would mean that I am innocent!" Then the roast chicken did stand up and cry out loud – The judge therefore pardoned the pilgrim.
Since the story went viral in Portugal, the rooster became the mascot of the country, representing trust, justice and good luck. Would you like to learn more about the Portuguese culture? Enrol in our courses now and follow us on social media!
