Oriental Studies

The Oriental Studies subject group of HKU SPACE offers a wide range of courses on Asian languages. Apart from comprehensive award-bearing programme suites in Japanese, Korean and Putonghua, there are also regular short courses on Cantonese and Thai, as well as on-demand customized courses in languages such as Vietnamese, Indonesian, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Nepali.

Yet the most popular courses remain the ones on Japanese, Korean and Chinese. These languages share many features due to interaction of the people and influence of literary Chinese. Some students, after completing their studies in one language, would go on to learn another, at the same time gaining valuable insights into the nuances of a neighbouring culture. 普通話基礎證書

本課程為有興趣學習普通話的人士開設。主要學習漢語拼音及普通話的發音規則和方法；掌握普通話聽、說、讀的基本功；瞭解廣東話與普通話在詞匯和語法方面的差異；學會用普通話進行日常生活簡單會話。「普通話基礎證書」和「普通話證書(中級)」是循序漸進的系列課程，系統地介紹普通話在語音、詞滙和語法方面的特點，培養學員的聽說能力。

廣東話速成班(初班)

此課程專為成人而設，涉及較多進階語言運用及成人學習情境，十八歲以下人士報讀前必須先電郵至 cnlang@hkuspace.hku.hk 申請。
本課程為有興趣用廣東話進行日常生活交流的人士而設，通過場景對話和課堂練習，令學員能掌握廣東話的發音、詞彙運用和語意表達。

Introductory Putonghua (for Non-Chinese Speakers)

This is a beginner’s course for non-Chinese speakers who wish to learn to speak Putonghua in a relatively short period of time. Participants will learn the “Hanyu-Pinyin” system and will be engaged in a lively setting with on-and-on drilling so as to enhance the use of Putonghua. The emphasis will be moved along with the more practical aspects of daily routines.

Introductory Cantonese (for non-Chinese speakers)

This course is specifically designed for adult learners and features more advanced language use in adult-oriented contexts. Applicants under the age of 18 must first seek approval by emailing cnlang@hkuspace.hku.hk .

This 50-hour course is for beginners, focusing first on daily life needs, then on speaking in full sentences and describing events. Participants will learn the basics of Cantonese Romanization, engage in simple conversations, and acquire self-learning skills by the end of the course.
