Shakuhachi is a vertical end blown bamboo flute originated in China. Introducing into Japan in the Tang and Song Dynasties, Shakuhachi has been preserved and developed in Japan since then and has become one of the traditional Japanese musical instruments. Understanding shakuhachi not only helps us understand the history and characteristics of traditional Japanese music but traditional Chinese music as well. In this seminar, Shakuhachi musician Yukio Chidori will introduce the characteristics of shakuhachi and its status in the musical exchange between China and Japan. He will also give a solo performance and an ensemble with piano so that participants can enjoy the beautiful shakuhachi music.
