In the summer of 1879, Sir John Pope Hennessy, the 8th Governor of Hong Kong, embarked on a trip to Japan along with his wife and children. Their stay lasted for three months. Despite it being a private vacation for Governor Hennessy, upon their arrival, the Meiji government greeted them with a 17-gun salute and provided high-level reception throughout their journey. What secrets lay behind this warm welcome? Where did Sir John Pope Hennessy visit in Japan and whom did he encounter? Drawing from historical records, the speaker will narrate this orchestrated journey of the Governor to Japan.
