Japanese gardens are not merely decorative landscapes but carefully designed spaces that embody Japan’s historical experiences, aesthetic values, and philosophical outlook. This talk offers an introductory overview of the historical development of Japanese gardens, tracing their transformation from early aristocratic gardens to Zen gardens, tea gardens, and stroll gardens.
Through selected examples, the lecture highlights the key characteristics of Japanese gardens, such as symbolic representation, asymmetrical composition, spatial sequencing, and the close relationship between nature, time, and human perception. The talk also explores how religious thought, cultural practices, and social change shaped the forms and functions of gardens in different periods.
