The caring needs of elderly persons increase with age. With the rising number of elderly population in Hong Kong, the demand of long term care, community care and residential care services increases respectively. “Ageing-in-place” and “Active-ageing” are also the strategies to reduce hospitalization and institutionalization rate through community-based services and health promotion. More manpower of multiple disciplines such as nurses, health workers, social workers, will be needed in order to provide and support adequate and quality care. As such, recruiting new entrants into the elderly service sector and enhancing the knowledge of current healthcare workers are important. Studying and training with recognized and specialized programmes can facilitate building or expanding a career in the industry at various level.
The programme aims to equip students with essential health care knowledge and nursing skills in carrying out the caregiver’s roles in community care settings. It addresses preventive care, shared care by multidisciplinary teams, patient empowerment and the use of technology in health care delivery. It also applies the integration of care with respect to the emphasis of responsibility, point of care and individuals’ experience.
