The Art of Stillness: Japanese Noh Theatre and Its Traditions

Supporting organisation: C. C. Wu Cultural and Education Foundation Fund

Discover the timeless art of Japanese Noh Theatre in this engaging lecture that blends storytelling, movement, and music with visuals from authentic performances. Noh, one of Japan’s oldest theatrical traditions, is renowned for its elegant masks, stylized gestures, and profound emotional depth.

During the first half (14:30–15:30), the speaker will explore the history, structure, and aesthetics of Noh, complemented by video clips from this year’s Hong Kong performances by the School of Hosho, supported by the C. C. Wu Cultural and Education Foundation Fund.

In the second half (15:45–16:30), audiences will join a live Zoom session with a current Noh learner from Sado in Niigata Prefecture, including an interactive discussion and audience Q&A.

Whether you’re new to Japanese culture or curious about traditional performing arts, this talk offers an inspiring way to explore the mystery and meaning of Noh. No Japanese knowledge required.

Language: Cantonese & Japanese
