Annual School Concert 2016FAME – Haydn & Schumann

Date
11 Apr 2016 (Mon)

The Annual School Concert always impresses and once again an eager audience enjoyed an exceptional evening of inspiring music at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 11 April.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Mr William Au Weng-hei SBS, JP, the audience enjoyed a musical odyssey that started off in the 18th century with a stirring performance of the allegro from the 3rd movement of Haydn's trumpet concerto performed with gusto by 'King' Ng King-chuen accompanied by the Hong Kong Strings under the baton of Professor Chan Wing-wah.

Following the trumpet solo, soprano Kylis Hung swept the audience into the 20th century with a touching rendering of On my Own from Les Miserables, before joining forces with baritone Totti Li for three popular hits from Phantom of the Opera concluding with All I ask of You.

Within moments, the audience were drawn back into the 19th century by the seductive tones of Schumann’s evocative Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.54 eloquently rendered by Anson Tang.

Following the intermission, the audience were catapulted back into the 20th century to face the angst of the students at the fictional New York High School of Performing Arts in the iconic teen musical FAME. Performed by an enthusiastic young cast from the Hong Kong Community College directed by Michelle Li of Rooftop Productions, the cleverly abridged version of the musical highlighted the best moments of the musical with fine renderings of the signature song FAME and Let’s Play a Love Scene before the concert came to a rollicking finale as the students finally found their FAME with a terrific rendering of Bring on Tomorrow.
