This course continues on from Beginners’ Latin 3. It will be based mainly on material from chapters 30 to 40 in the textbook Latin via Ovid, which focus principally on reading minimally adapted hexameter verse from both the Metamorphoses and Virgil’s Aeneid. There will also be consolidation of basic Latin grammar, most of which was covered in Latin 1-3, and supplementary reading material from the Cambridge Latin Course and Fabulae Faciles. The emphasis will be on developing a basic reading ability but with some oral work in addition. The course will also deal with cultural aspects of the ancient Roman world and of the continuing use of Latin in later centuries.
