Australia

HKU SPACE has a great track record in preparing our students for legal practice in Hong Kong, with far more students admitted to the PCLL from HKU SPACE than any other provider of English law courses. But its always good to have another option. So if you're thinking of moving overseas, or want to have a fallback option just in case you are among the minority of HKU SPACE applicants who don't get into the PCLL, many graduates have found that studying law at HKU SPACE is also a great pathway to qualifying as a lawyer in Australia.

Australia is a common-law jurisdiction with a legal system similar to Hong Kong. That means if you study law at HKU SPACE, you'll often have completed most of the requirements for continuing to professional legal training in Australia. In some cases, you may even be able to use this as a pathway to apply for a job and residency in Australia as well.

Both the CPE (taught at HKU SPACE as the Graduate Diploma in English and Hong Kong Law) and UK law degrees such as the University of London LL.B. are included in the list of overseas law courses recognised for admission to the Australian legal profession. This means that many HKU SPACE graduates report they only need to spend a few months doing a few quick top-up courses before proceeding to the Australian equivalent of the PCLL, a vocational law course called Practical Legal Training.

Best of all, you don't need to worry about getting good grades. Many graduates report that since entry to the Australian equivalent of the PCLL is non-selective, once you've finished your law studies on these HKU SPACE pathways its almost guaranteed that you'll be able to  practice as a lawyer in Australia.

Just remember that, since Australia is a federal system, you will need to check the exact requirements for the Australian state in which you plan to practice. Also since admission rules are subject to change (and this information is provided for general guidance only), please be sure to carefully check the current admission regulations yourself.

Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom
This course is now full for 2024 and we are no longer accepting fresh applications for this year. However you can still start your legal studies this year on our popular University of London LLB preparatory courses or the Certificate in Legal Studies. If you wish to wait until next year to start your legal studies, please check this page regularly for updates on when we will open admission to the CPE's 2025 intake.

The Graduate Diploma in English and Hong Kong Law (CPE) is one of the the best pathways to the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL), the only route to qualifying as either a solicitor or barrister in Hong Kong.

Apply early to improve your chances of being admitted to this very popular programme, offered in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University.
