The talk compares examples of self-correction and correcting others in English language textbooks in Hong Kong and in real-life business interactions in Hong Kong. The examples are compared in terms of how often they occur, the language structure, and how they are used in communication.

Examples of self-correction and correcting others were extracted from fifteen upper secondary English textbooks in Hong Kong and 30 hours of audio recordings from different business settings in Hong Kong Corpus of Spoken English (HKCSE).

The talk aims to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses observed in the English textbooks and discuss implications for enhancing speakers’ communicative competence in the workplace in Hong Kong.
