Professor Danny Chan, S Y and H Y Cheng Professor in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, The University of Hong Kong
Graduated from the University of Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Science (degree with honours), Master of Science and PhD, Prof. Chan continued research at his alma mater on heritable skeletal disorders with a focus on extracellular matrix proteins. He joined the University of Hong Kong in 1998, maintaining his research in skeletal biology using mouse as a model to address disease mechanisms in vivo, as well as human genetic studies to define genetic risk factors for common degenerative skeletal conditions such as intervertebral disc degeneration. His research contributed to the molecular understanding of many forms of the human osteochondrodysplasias. In recognition, he was presented with “The Premier’s Award for Health & Medical Research in Victoria, Australia; and more recently, he received the Croucher Senior Fellowship from the Croucher Foundation as recognition of his contribution to skeletal research in Hong Kong.

Synonymous to the Star War trilogy starting with Episode IV: “A New Hope”, stories of DNA are often told from the structure of the “folded DNA” as a double helix that has unfolded much of the mysteries surrounding this molecule, as the genetic material to all life forms on planet Earth. Solving the structure of DNA by Francis Crick and James Watson is clearly not Episode I but a pivotal moment in life sciences linked to previous game-changing ideas from Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection, to Gregor Mende’s principles of heredity, and the hyperspace jumps of the “Millennium Falcon”, taking us in a wild journey to the present day of knowing the entire blue print of not only the human genome, but numerous species, providing an evolution history of who we are, where we come from, what are imprinted in each of our genomes, and what are installed for us in the future. The technologies developed for DNA is also transforming health systems, from precision medicine to vaccine development for global health. These are only few of the fascinating stories from “the book of DNA”.
